The word for hippopotamus may mean river horse, but that unwieldy creature bears as much relation to the legendary racehorse Man ‘O War as a first generation elliptical does to the new Smooth Agile DMT Elliptical Trainer.
The difference between the two fitness machines is all in the name – the DMT part of the name to be exact - which stands for dynamic motion trainer. Standard ellipticals use a forward and back glide motion. While this is much easier on the joints than pounding the highways and byways of your hometown or even pounding the track of your home treadmill, it is still a limited range of motion.
In contrast the Agile’s patented contra-lateral motion works on more muscle groups than other machines, increasing strength and, by acting on the muscles around the ankles, knees and hips, it increases flexibility too.
The Agile DMT is more demanding than the standard elliptical because by increasing the range of motion and resistance levels it combines both strength and cardio-vascular training which results in:
Some people decide to buy the Smooth Agile DMT trainer as an addition to the fitness equipment already in their home gym. That is because after using a standard stationary bike, rowing machine or treadmill for a while the machine’s ability to push the user declines. As the user gets stronger he or she overtakes the power capacity of the machine.
Adding the Agile DMT to the home gym ramps up the possible intensity of exercise to a point beyond where most people can ever reach. Others having decided to unglue themselves from the sofa are looking for a machine that can get them into shape yesterday. They want something that works and works fast.

Given that the usual safety precautions and sensible exercise habits are followed, the Agile DMT is equally suited to both buyers although according to Smooth Fitness the Agile is the only machine that is needed for a full body workout. In forward motion the Agile DMT Elliptical Machine works out the quadriceps, gluts and core muscles in the same way as repeated squats, abs and lunges.
Backward motion of the DMT Elliptical from Smooth works on calves and hamstrings. By adding resistance to the motion handles, the arms, shoulders, back and chest are getting a workout in either direction and the exertion required is putting your heart and lungs through their paces.
Traditional treadmills and other fitness machines do work. There is no question that someone who pounds away every night on a
standard machine is doing themselves more good than if they were TV surfing, but, let’s be honest; treadmills are b-o-o-o-r-ing.
Some lucky souls have the ability to just zone out while exercising. Their bodies may be thundering along on a treadmill in a sweaty gym but their minds are already lying in Waikiki with six pack abs and a peachy butt. But for many of us, exercise is not so easy. It is a necessary evil, a means to an end. By building in the option of increasing resistance and increasing the range of motion, the Agile DMT makes for a far more efficient workout.
According to the manufacturer, with the Agile DMT, less is more: You won’t need two, three or four machines to get a full body workout. And you won’t need an hour and a half at the gym when you can get it all in just 30 minutes at home.
Space Requirements The Agile DMT requires quite a large commitment of both cash and floor space. At a whopping 73 inches long by 31 wide and 65 tall and weighing nearly 400lbs this is not a machine that tidily tucks away in a corner when not in use. Its price tag is fairly hefty too so it is worthwhile doing that little bit extra research to know that it is exactly what you want.
Delivery and Installation The Smooth Agile DMT arrives in three boxes. Depending on where you buy it from, installation and shipping are usually included in the price. A little online research turns up a few rumblings of discontent regarding inexperienced installation agents, broken parts and weird warranty limitations. (Apparently, you are not covered by any warranty if you live in Hawaii or Alaska and neither will the customer service department at Smooth condone shipping as close as the warranty covers then charging you the difference).
The actual installation of the Smooth Agile DMT is often carried out by agents, as opposed to Smooth’s own technicians. Some are so unfamiliar with the machine that they end up leaving after hours of messing about leaving it still inoperable. That seems to be the exception more than the rule. To be fair, there are a lot of glowing reports from happy customers and it is true that you can expect an Olympian workout from this machine – if you can get it working.
If you decide to buy, do check who will be doing the installation and how much experience they have with the Smooth Agile DMT.
